Read it!: On Bullshit

This little book is highly enlightening and entertaining. It defines and muses about all the bullshit we make and take. The little book begins:

One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted.

A theoretical understanding of bullshit is worth this little read when dealing with art!

  1. Sometimes the truth is too ugly or painful to face head on, so the art of living often compensates for this by deflecting and ignoring it. We create elaborate fantasies to make up for the turgid reality. Our self delusion isn’t just practical, it seems necessary. Sometimes even the best of the truth must be approached sideways. Its almost as if we have to keep it in the corner of our eyes rather than staring at it straight on. Its like the light from the sun: We can see the world in its illumination and shadows, but to look at the sun itself would burn our eyes out.

Not always, of course! But just enough that we can cope with the hard truths that often assail us. A life of unmediated truth would be unlivable. We must be thankful for the BS in our lives, and learn to understand it not as a stand-in for true things, but as the nearest reflection we may have or want to have access to. Learning to interpret it is the challenge. Learning to weed through the less obvious untruth and find the kernels that point in ways we actually can live. That’s the art of being human.
